Skin cancer can be classified into three types – melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma.

Melanoma skin cancer affects the cells that produce melanin though it also known to start from moles as well. Squamous cell carcinoma usually starts from the squamous cells that are located top layer of the skin. Basal cell carcinoma on the other hand affects the basal cells that are located on skin’s bottom layer.

The features of a normal mole are symmetrical in shape, uniform color, and have consistent borders. If a mole is asymmetrical in shape and its coloring is not uniform then these moles should be inspected by a dermatologist immediately. The elevations of these moles are not consistent and they tend to be greater than ¼ of an inch or 6 mm in size. Signs of this type cancer can noticed in the nail beds of fingers and toes. If the area of the nail bed is discolored or is either blue or brown in color then it should be inspected by a dermatologist. The symptoms of squamous cell carcinoma usually start appearing on the face first. The areas that are exposed to the sun are usually affected. The affected area can crusty. Having a dermatologist inspect lumps, bumps, or spots that are scaly or ulcerated is a good idea. The symptoms can also be patches that are both raised and shiny as well as being surrounded by scaly areas.

The symptoms of basal cell carcinoma have the tendency to appear scaly and flat. Though they may start out being small, they can and will grow in size. Their sometimes appear to be flesh colored and one can see small vessels traveling through them.
