The Various Arthritis Symptoms

There are many types of Arthritis. Over a 100 in fact, but the most common ones are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, and Septic arthritis.

Rheumatoid Arthritis symptoms include joint swelling, red & puffy hands, fatigue, fever, joint pain, experiencing pain just by touching the joints, weight loss, firm bumps of tissue can be found under the skin of a person’s arm, and morning stiffness that is still there after one hour. This form of arthritis affects the person’s smaller joints including feet, ankles, hands, and wrists. Other joints including neck, jaws, hips, knees, elbows and shoulders are affected as the disease progresses. The symptoms affect joints on both sides. That means if your wrist is paining than the wrists on both sides will experience pain. These symptoms sometime have the habit of coming and going.

Ankylosing Spondylitis Arthritis symptoms include stiffness or pain in the lower back. This stiffness or pain usually appears after the person has been idle for long periods or when the person gets up in the morning. Fever, weight loss, fatigue and loss of appetite are other symptoms of this form of arthritis.

Psoriatic Arthritis symptoms include foot pain, swollen toes and fingers, and lower back pain. This type of arthritis affects points where ones ligaments and tendons attach themselves to the bone including Achilles tendonitis. In the case of swollen toes and fingers, the toes and fingers swell and look sausage like and are very painful. Swelling and deformation in both the feet and hands of a person can take place before the significant joint symptoms appear. This kind of arthritis may result in the development of spondylitis in certain people.

IVF – an Infertility Treatment Technique

IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilization; a technique in the sperm fertilizes the egg outside the body. This technique is one of the major types of treatments used for treating infertility. It is used only after assisted reproductive technology methods have failed. The first step of this technique is the controlling of the ovulatory process using hormones. After this step the doctor removes the eggs or ova from the woman’s ovaries. These eggs are placed in the fluid medium along with sperms. Once the sperm fertilizes the egg, the resulting zygote or fertilized egg is then placed in the woman’s uterus. This is done with the objective of establishing successful pregnancy.

IVF is very controversial topic even today. It has faced opposition from the Roman Catholic Church which considers this process unnatural. The Church proposes that couples who are not capable of having children should adopt one. It fells that since there are plenty of children around the world.

There have been cases where mix-ups have taken place. Couples have been given fertilized eggs belonging to another couple and have been informed only after the birth of the child.

There are people around the world who feel that women who desire to have children after menopause period that is when they are in their 50s or 60s is not correct. Many also oppose the use of IVF by unmarried, single, and same sex couples. This opposition still lingers even when it has been proved that children whose parents were single, homosexual or unmarried did not suffer any harm or were at disadvantage because of this.

Another source of controversy is the placing of multiple embryos in a woman’s uterus. By placing more than one embryo in the woman’s uterus can threaten both the women’s and the children’s health. Such a case has taken place in California and the doctor who did this procedure now facing the risk of being stripped of his license to practice medicine.

How Gender Selection is Done

Gender selection is not something new. It has been there from ancient times. They are different methods by which a couple can make sure that the baby born to them is of the sex they want. Two of these methods are sperm gender selection and PGD or pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.

Sperm gender selection is based on the weights of x-carrying sperm and the y-carrying sperm. The success rate of this method is around 70 to 75 percent for both sexes.

Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis is the latest method used in gender selection. It is performed under controlled condition in the laboratory. The embryo has to be at the eight–cell stage. The outer membrane of the embryo is cut enabling the doctor to take one cell for analysis. The cell is checked to see if the Y chromosome is present. The doctor who performs this technique can guarantee around 99 % success rate. This method was originally developed to check if the baby has any genetic defects, but now a days couples use this method as a form of gender discrimination.

Gender selection is a very controversial topic. People seem to prefer boys over girls and this has led to abortion if the child is a girl. There is a strong belief that boy are better than girls. There is no scientific proof of this as girls are making progress in almost every field. The cost of bringing up a boy is increasing by the day. If this trend is not stopped soon and the normal gender balance restored, it would difficult for humans to survive.

Like the case in China where due to the one child policy have forced people to kill girl children. Now there are regions in China were there are plenty of boys, but not enough girls. In short these boys are finding it hard to get a bride.

ZIFT – Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer

ZIFT is the short form for Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer. It is the procedure of placing embryos into the fallopian tube directly. This procedure makes it possible for the embryo to develop in an environment that is most natural to them. In other words they are not developed in an artificial environment found in IVF laboratories. This procedure is very helpful if the woman concerned is more than 40 years old. Women who have tried to become pregnant through IVF many times and never did succeed.

The main controversy surrounding ZIFT is that couples may use this procedure to determine whether their child is a boy or a girl. In other words it could be used as a form of sex discrimination. One of the major drawbacks with this method is multiple births.

There have been cases where the woman concerned gave birth to triplets.

ZIFT is actually a process that combines both IVF and GIFT. The average time needed to complete on such cycle is around five weeks. During the first stage the women has to take a drug that will stimulate her ovaries to produce more eggs. Once these eggs mature they are collected. These mature eggs are put in a fluid that contains sperms. In short they are fertilized outside the body. The doctor then places these fertilized eggs back into the woman’s fallopian tube using a procedure known as laparoscopy. If this method is to succeed then the woman in concern should have at least one of her fallopian tubes working.

This method is not suitable if the woman in concern suffers from either fallopian tube related problems or has ectopic pregnancies. The method is also useful if the man in concern suffers from low sperm count. This method is however not very popular even though the result is positive if done correctly. The number of couples choosing to undergo this method seems to be declining.

Why Egg Donors Often Face Controversies?

A fertile woman who voluntarily gives one or more of her eggs (the number is usually between 10 and 15) so that they can be used either for biomedical research or assisted reproduction is called an egg donor. Assisted reproduction means helping a woman who either lack their own egg or have their eggs that are not of good quality to become pregnant. These donor eggs are used only after IVF or in vitro fertilization has failed multiple times. They are also used for women suffering from either elevated FSH levels or premature ovarian failure. Even women who are over 43 years of age and want to have a child also make use of these donor eggs.

Egg donors have been and continue to be the subject of controversy. There are arguments on both sides. People who object to egg donation on the grounds that many of these donors don’t bother where they eggs end up. These eggs could end up in labs where they are dissected for science. Since these eggs still have the ability to produce life, many individuals as well as groups feel that egg donation is wrong.

Another controversy that dogs egg donors is which person has the rights to the donated egg. Does the egg belong to the donor or to the women who receives the egg? Who are the true parents of child is another controversy that will dog these donors.

People opposing egg donation point out that these donors get anything from around 5,000 dollars to 10,000 dollars whenever they participate in a donation cycle. In other words these eggs are not donated, but sold to the wealthy couples.

There are many groups of people who want to use donated eggs. Those who decide to have children late in life, those who are young, but infertile or medically infertile and those who are married but not yet a family.
